Edible Riparian Forest Buffer Program
Edible Riparian Forest Buffers for a More Resilient Bennington County
Restoring Our Rivers, Feeding Our Communities
In the wake of the July 2023 floods, the Community Resilience Initiative was launched to assess and address the specific needs of Bennington County. One key priority? Expanding riparian forest buffers to strengthen our waterways, reduce flood risks, and provide more publicly accessible food sources for both people and wildlife.
That’s why the Bennington County Conservation District (BCCD) is working with local landowners, farmers, and community partners to establish Edible Riparian Forest Buffers—planting species that benefit our local environment while also increasing food security and habitat for wildlife.
Why Edible Riparian Buffers Matter in Bennington County
Our region’s rivers and streams are vital to our farms, forests, and communities. But in recent years, increased flooding and erosion have put them at risk. Riparian buffers—forested areas along waterways—help stabilize banks, improve water quality, and provide critical habitat. By planting fruit- and nut-bearing trees, shrubs, and perennial plants, we can make these spaces even more valuable.
Planting for People, Wildlife & Water
BCCD is prioritizing species that:
- Protect Our Waterways – Reducing erosion and filtering pollutants before they reach rivers and streams.
- Support Local Wildlife – Providing essential food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and other species.
- Feed Our Community – Establishing sustainable, publicly accessible food sources like nut trees, fruiting shrubs, and perennial berries.
Get Involved in Growing a Resilient Bennington County
A variety of funding programs are available to support riparian plantings, and BCCD can help landowners access financial and technical assistance. However, community members are also encouraged to take action independently—whether by planting on their own land or volunteering in local buffer restoration projects.
